History

Our legacy firm Austin, Washington, and Davenport was founded in 1941 by the late Michigan Secretary of State, Richard H. Austin, the first African-American CPA in Michigan (and 11th in the United States). In 1971, the firm was reorganized as George Johnson & Company as a sole proprietorship in Detroit, Michigan by George G. Johnson, CPA. In the early 2000’s the firm expanded into the midwest region, servicing clients in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. GJC currently has offices in downtown Detroit and downtown Chicago. Over the years, GJC has helped businesses and organizations thrive, from Detroit businesses in Black Bottom and Paradise Valley in the 1940’s and 1950’s, to Fortune 1000 companies in the 21st Century. Today we rank among the larger certified public accounting firms founded in the Metropolitan Detroit area.

We are an independent member of the BDO Alliance USA, which brings us an enhanced set of resources to help us better serve our clients. Our firm has grown steadily through formal practice development by both expanding services to existing clients and by offering a full range of services to new clients.
